// What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is the process of optimizing your website to climb higher in Search Engine Results Pages or SERPs.
The goal of a search engine is to present its users with the most relevant content. It’ll rank the URLs in order of relevance and display them in the search results.
// Why is SEO Important?
The lower down the results your URL appears, the less traffic you’ll drive to that page. This is why the race to the top of Search Engines continues to grow. The thing is, you’re not even going to be in the running if you don’t optimize your website or understand your customers.
// How Do Search Engines Work?
Search engines use programs called spiders or crawlers to crawl through all the pages of a website.
Before the spiders leave the website, they log all the data that might later prove relevant to users’ searches.
When users carry out a search, they’re prompting the search engines to sift through the Search Index, looking for specific pages that match their queries.
The search engines only know which pages to display based on the data they collected upon crawling the site.
These sites, therefore, need to be completely optimized at the point of the crawl to ensure the search engines categorize them correctly for as many relevant searches as possible.
// Ranking Factors
Search engines are always evolving to provide a better service for their users. Here are the key ranking factors you should focus on in order to optimize your website.
/ Content Quality
It’s important to remember that the reason search engines are always evolving is to provide better quality, highly relevant results to users.
To be able to create the highest quality content, you first need to fully understand your users. Which brings us very neatly to…
/ User Search Intent
User search intent is the goal a user has when typing terms into the search bar. You need to present users with high-quality and highly relevant landing pages that match the intent of these moments.
Being able to carry out detailed keyword research that helps you understand user search intent is one of the most powerful tools in your SEO arsenal.

/ User Experience (UX)
Keeping users engaged with your website isn’t just about the content you write on your pages. It’s also about the structure of your actual website and how easy and intuitive it is for users to navigate through.
Google uses backlinks as a ranking signal to measure the validity, relevancy and authority of your website. You may also hear the terms “incoming links” or “inbound links” to describe backlinks. Generally, the more backlinks you have, and the higher their quality, the further up search results you’ll appear for the target keyword.

// The Types of SEO
We refer to these 3 tactics as: on-site, off-site and technical SEO.
On site SEO refers to the actions you can take directly on the website, that are visible to the user, to improve its ranking.
Off site SEO is the measure you can take outside of your website to boost your rankings.
Technical SEO is about optimising the backend of your website for crawling and indexing by search engines.
You should now have a good understanding of what SEO is, how it works and how it can benefit your website.
